Ladykiller

Ladykiller

"…an excellent collection of short stories from an important new voice. This is an intelligent, contemporary book... Nothing should have been done better in Ladykiller. Charlotte Gill's voice is on every page, her sure eye for contemporary detail, her originality and unsentimental wit, her ability to deliver us to endings with a sense of having read tellingly about our own world. About ourselves, even. That is Charlotte Gill's authority."
-The Globe and Mail

An astonishing debut collection of stories about escape, self-sabotage, and the power of unconscious desire from an exciting new voice in Canadian literature. Ladykiller is a brave collection that reveals the strange wisdom embedded in our darkest instincts.

  • Thomas Allen Publishers, Canada, Spring 2005

  • Winner of the Danuta Gleed Literary Award
  • Winner of the BC Book Prize for fiction
  • Nominated for the 2005 Governor General's award for fiction

"Ladykiller... takes Canadian fiction into edgy new territory...Gill's stories smack of intelligence and demand to be noticed. ...her language connects with the reader in a fresh and immediate way. It's a relief to read prose that's so steely-sharp. By using superbly wrought language, Gill pulls us in. This is a courageous collection."
-Vancouver Sun

"These are edgy, taut stories… Ladykiller is as fresh as it is stark… Like afterglow, the stories are imprinted in our minds long after they've come and gone. Gill may be tough with her language and her readers, taking them on journeys they may prefer not to go on, but with her characters she is sensitive and non-judgmental. The world can use more of that. Gill's is a welcome new voice."
-January Magazine

"If you want to read someone who's definitely on the rise, pick it up. Gill writes with clarity and courage about promiscuous men and the women who (maybe) love them... fascinating reading."
-Now magazine

"Ladykiller, with its vivacious language and compulsive pace, heralds a new breed of Canadian short story. A sophisticated collection replete with dazzling, indomitable prose and audacious characters... With surgical precision and stunning insight, Charlotte Gill cuts to the blood pulse of love and relationship."
-Nancy Lee, author of Dead Girls

"There is something both dark and tender in Ladykiller. Charlotte Gill is a wise purveyor of the heart's loyal yet capricious nature. A stylish and sassy debut."
-Michael Winter, author of The Big Why

"In Charlotte Gill’s shockingly unsentimental stories, her emotional pyromaniacs hurtle towards various degrees of conflagration. CAUTION: Her prose is booby-trapped with combinations of words so lethally effective they may as well be dynamite."
-Zsuzsi Gartner
